  • Only in a Mia Hansen-Løve film would the discovery of ‘The Unabomber Manifesto’ in an anarchist commune prompt a discussion about the gap between thought and action rather than a call to the police. No-nonsense fiftysomething commune guest and heroine Nathalie (an enjoyably brusque Isabelle Huppert) pursues her interesting find with a curt rationality that uncovers a fading friendship, not a hot conspiracy. It’s a neat move, typical of writer-director Hansen-Løve, who excels at taking potentially melodramatic situations and defusing them with careful emotional truths. Her films often centre on characters working through disaster or upheaval: the suicidal lovestruck teen of Goodbye First Love (2011), the family tragedy of Father of My Children (2009). In the wry, humane and thoughtful Things to Come, Nathalie’s late middle age is upended by a sudden eruption in her marriage, professional setbacks and the death of her demanding elderly mother. Yet the film treats this destabilising cluster of crises with extraordinary restraint.

8. First-look review: Mia Hansen-Løve's Things to Come (L'Avenir, 2016) - BFI

  • Bevat niet: actors | Resultaten tonen met:actors

  • The English title of writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest film – screening in competition at Berlinale – comes up over a wide shot of a cliff-side tomb, an ominous suggestion that the Things that are to Come will be decidedly bleak. Despair is happily not the film’s tone, however, as Isabelle Huppert’s philosophy teacher Nathalie navigates life in middle-age with a graceful defiance. Much as Hansen-Løve’s All is Forgiven (2007), Father of My Children (2009), Goodbye First Love (2011) and Eden (2014) followed their protagonists through years of changing circumstances, Things to Come follows Nathalie as she endures a series of trials including an unwell mother, political protests, marital infidelity and career compromises.

  • The shifts in human interactions as we age are a main thrust. How does the universal inform the specific? Mia Hansen-Løve uses a fine-toothed comb in the interplay of acting, plot, mood, so that she catches revealing nuances of dread and relief. Things considered eternal turn out not to be and sometimes it happens that you miss a house more than a person. The box is open. The cat of nine lives is curious - more killer than ready to be killed. Freedom and loneliness enter into a fight. In times of transition, shields can be difficult to find.
